Qatar Central Bank (QCB) released data on Thursday morning indicated that the total Reserve Money (M0) in the banking system increased by the end of January by about QR 3.56 billion above last December, to reach the level of QR 75.61 billion, compared to QR 72.06 billion at last December, and QR 57.95 billion two years ago in January 2018.
The Reserve Money consists of four components:
Issued Currency, Required Reserve, Excess Money, and Others. these components were as Follows in January:
Issued Currency: is the total amount of QR currency issued by the QCB up to any time.
Required Reserve is 4.50% of the total amount of the customer deposits with the commercial banks operating in Qatar.
Excess Reserve is the unused surplus with local banks at any time, and banks optionally deposited with QCB as a reserve in order to cover the clearing operations between them.
In Details, the increase in the Reserve Money in January 2020 has come from changes in its various components as follows:
\u2022 The Issued Currency increased by QR 1.08 billion above last December to QR17.48 billion, and compared to QR 17.03 billion a year ago.
\u2022 Required Reserve accounted for more than half of the Reserve Money, and it rose in January by about QR1073 million from December to reach QR 38.52 billion, compared to QR 37.45 billion at last December, and QR 36.23 billion a year ago. It is worth noting that this category is considered a stable category and is usually increase by increasing deposits with commercial banks.
\u2022 Excess Reserve consisting of bank deposits with QCB, has increased in January to QR 5.28 billion, compared to QR 4.99 billion at last December, and QR 3.6 billion a year ago, and QR 3.3 billion two years ago.
\u2022 Others deposits representing deposit of the banks with QCB through the QMR system, its balance increased to QR14.34 billion compared to QR 13.22 billion last December, but it was less than its level in January 2019 of QR19.2 billion.
On the other hand, the Reserve Money referred to above is equal to the Counterpart Assets, and it consists of net Foreign Assets plus net Domestic Assets.
The Net Foreign Assets were low in the first year of the siege between June 2017 until August 2018, it was below the level of QR 93.5 billion, and then there were steady increases after that, and it reached the level of QR 141.67 billion in December 2019, then rose to QR 144.14 billion in January 2020 .The significant increase in net Foreign Assets in the past two years indicates a significant improvement in the liquidity of the banking system, despite the pressures exerted by some blockade countries on these reserves.
As for the Net Domestic Assets, it were often negative, and at the end of 2014 they were at the level of negative QR 101.3 billion, then negative QR101.3 billion at the end of 2015, then negative QR 85.6 billion at the end of 2016, and it turned into positive QR 9.8 billion at the end of 2017, then returned to negative QR 26.7 billion at the end of 2018, and to negative QR 69.6 billion at the end of 2019, and settled at negative QR 68.52 by the end of last January 2020 .
The total Net Foreign Assets with Net Domestic Assets increased to QR 75.61 billion at the end of January, which is equivalent to the Reserve Money, or what is known as the Monetary Base (M0), or high-value money<\/p>\n\n\n\n
